A few hours from the imperial city of Cusco, Ausangate is the most sacred mountain in Southern Peru and the fifth highest mountain in Peru at 6384m. In Andean cosmovision, the Ausangate is the creator of the waters, cradle of the legendary Willcamayu (river Vilcanota) that fertilizes the mother earth in the inter-Andean valleys, flowing to the exuberant Amazon.
This circuit is difficult, but not impossible. It is important to acclimatize before you begin. The walk is quite long and there are challenging high passes but with a seemingly endless view of wonderful landscapes it is worth doing if you are an experienced trekker looking for adventure.

DAY 1: CUSCO – TINKI

You will be picked up from your hotel early in the morning. We leave Cusco in a private vehicle heading towards the town of T’inki (3800 msnm / 12464 feet). On the way we stop at Urcos, where you can visit a beautiful lake of the same name and the village with a farming community where you can appreciate spectacular panoramic view. We will pass by Ocongate, the capital of the district of the same name and continuing 1 hour more we will arrive at our destination- T’inki, where we will spend our first night in a local hostel.

DAY 2: T’INKI – UPIS

We leave T’inki to start a slight ascent that crosses through the puna (dry, high area with little vegetation). After 4 hours of hiking we will have a splendid panoramic view of the sacred mountains (apus) and Ausangate (6372 masl / 20900 Feet). From this vantage point we can see the contrast in landscapes – dry desert-like hills reach the glaciers of Mt. Ausangate, while below the valley is a bright green. If we are lucky we might even see a condor in the skies! After a typical lunch, we continue for two more hours to reach our camp in Upis at 4400 m / 14432 ft. From this point, we can appreciate some wonderful views of the snow peaks in the area, there we will spend our second night embraced by the sacred mountains

DAY 3: UPIS – AUSANGATE QOCHA

After a typical breakfast, we will continue our journey with a two-hour climb to reach the open (4850 m / 15908 ft). Then we will descend to the habitat of hawks and vizcachas (Andean rabbit-like chinchillas).
This area also has three beautiful lakes with red, green and turquoise hues (Pukaqocha, HatunPukaqocha, and Q’omerqocha) and spectacular views of the snowy peaks. After lunch, we continue with the ascent that will take us to the second mountain pass, Abra de Apuchata (4900 masl / 16072 feet). We will then descend for half an hour arriving at our camp for the night- Ausangate Qocha (4440 masl / 14563 feet).

DAY 4: AUSANGATE QOCHA – Q’AMPA

After breakfast, we begin our day with a two-hour ascent- We leave early to climb for two hours towards the Abra de Palomani (5200 m / 17056 ft). This is the highest part of the whole excursion, then we will descend towards the pasture area of camelids such as llamas, alpacas until arriving at Pampa Cancha (4050 masl / 13284 feet). We continue to our camp in Q’ampa (4300 masl / 14104 feet).

DAY 5: QAMPA – PACCHANTA

Today we continue our excursion towards the Q’ampa (5000 masl / 16400 feet), The silence of this remote wilderness is inspiring! From here we have an excellent view of Mount Tampa. We will see the Q’omerqocha lagoon and will arrive at Pacchanta (4100 masl / 13448 ft) after a five hour trek. Pacchanta is an indigenous community that still preserves its traditions since the Inca times. There are also thermal waters where you can enjoy a relaxing bath close to the camp so you are ready to rest on our last night.

DAY 6: PACCHANTA – T’INKI – CUSCO

After breakfast, we said goodbye to the people who gave us a warm welcome during our trip of those who will always keep the memory alive and start travelling back towards T’inki. Climbing to the village will enjoy our farewell lunch and then we return to the city of Cusco, arriving around 7:00 pm.
