At the time of the Incas there were two kinds of path; one that was the Royal Road called “Qapaqñan” in Quechua, and the other was the common path (Runaq Purinan). There are different sites between Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu where one can note the variety in architectural resources that give rationality, importance and mysticism to the Royal Road. It did not have a commercial use; there were other, more simple, trails to transport products, llamas and people to Machu Picchu. The purpose of the Classic Inca Trail was religious and ceremonial, a pilgrimage that included rituals to honour the mountains and peaks of the route, like Veronica or Wakaywilka.

DAY 01: CUSCO / PISCACUCHU (Km 82) / WAYLLABAMBA

You will be picked up from your accommodation at around 5:00 am. Once everyone in the group has been collected, we will continue our journey bound for the community of Piscacucho – Km82, the starting point of the trek. Before we get there we will stop at the town of Ollantaytambo where you can buy any last-minute items you might need for the trek and have breakfast. When we arrive at Km82 the guide will introduce you to the chef and porters who will be accompanying us on the trip. At the entrance you have to show your passport that you used when booking the trip to avoid problems when entering. We will walk for approximately 7 hours.
We begin our hike by crossing the bridge over the Urubamba River and walking along its left shore as it flows northwest along the Sacred Valley. Following the trail along flat terrain, we arrive in Miskay (2800m/9184ft), to then ascend and finally see, from the tallest part of an overlook, the impressive Inca city of Llactapata (2650m/8692ft). We continue trekking along the valley created by the Kusichaca River, gradually climbing for about five hours until we reach the community of Wayllabamba (3000m/9840ft), where we set our first camp. All along the way we enjoy spectacular views of the Vilcanota ridge on the opposite side of the Urubamba River, where the impressive Veronica peak reigns at 5832 meters above sea level, not to mention the diversity of wild flora and fauna that can be found all along the valley.

DAY 02: WAYLLABAMBA / PACAYMAYU

The time we wake up is determined by the guide who judges how much time the group will need depending on their hiking level, usually 6am. We will have breakfast and then begin the ascent to the site of Warmiwañusca (dead woman’s pass) located at 4250 meters above sea level. Travel time is 4 hours from our campsite to the pass; and then we will descend down a path of well-paved steps for around 3 hours to the Pacaymayu valley (3600m), where we camp after approximately 7h of hiking. Due to the changes in altitude, we advise that on this day, your daypack is well stocked with candies, chocolates and coca leaves that will keep your sugar level high, and help with altitude sickness.

DAY 03: PACAYMAYU / PHUYUPATAMARCA / WIÑAYHUAYNA

After a well-deserved rest we continue our Classic Inca Trail, climbing to the second pass, the Abra Runkurakay (3970m/13022ft) where we will enjoy a delicious lunch in the Ch’akiqocha sector. After going over the pass, we descend towards Yanacocha (Black Lagoon) and enter the cloud forest to finally arrive at Sayacmarca (3624m/11887ft). This is a beautiful complex made up of a semicircular construction, enclosures at different levels, narrow streets, liturgical fountains, patios and irrigation canals. Continuing up an easy climb, we arrive at the third pass, the Abra Phuyupatamarca (3700m/12136ft). This is one of the most complete and best-preserved archaeological complexes along the Inca Trail to Machupicchu, and is located on the highest point of a mountain. Curiously, Phuyupatamarca means ¨town over the clouds¨. After exploring the Archaeological site we continue descending for about two and a half hours until the Inca citadel of Wiñayhuayna; A beautiful place on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu where we will have a farewell dinner and spend our last night.

DAY 04: WIÑAYHUAYNA / MACHUPUCCHU / CUSCO

After a very early breakfast, at 5.00 am we will pass through Wiñaywayna control and continue our journey towards Inti Punku (Puerta del Sol). The purpose of this is to appreciate the sunrise from the mountains and you will have an amazing panorama of the whole Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. We continue the trek for another hour until we reach the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu, where we will have a guided tour for 2 hours. After the tour, you can explore the citadel on your own and for an additional cost you can climb Hauyna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain. Depending on the return schedule of your train, you will have some time to look around Aguas Calientes and have some lunch or visit the hot springs before taking the train to Ollantaytambo. You will be picked up and taken back to Cusco in our transport vehicle.
